Let’s face it, kitchen and bathroom renovators are a dime a dozen. So, if you’re in the market for one, then make sure you check for the following five things when choosing your next renovator
#1: Do they follow the Building Code of Australia?
Many Australian Standards have been developed for the building and construction industry in order to ensure not only a safe working environment but also an effective one in terms of cost and delivery.
The Building Code of Australia is included in the Standards and outlines how things are supposed to be undertaken in the building and construction industry, some of which are compulsory.
Make sure your renovator of choice has a copy and adheres to the Standards.
#2: Do they have Public Liability Insurance?
Insurance in the building and renovation industry is, quite simply, a must.
If your chosen renovator does not have any public or products liability insurance or a workers’ compensation policy then you, as the homeowner, could be held responsible for any claims. Such insurance provide businesses in the industry with protection should they be liable for payment in relation to third party personal injury or property damage.
As a homeowner, this is the last thing you want to be worried about, so make sure your renovator of choice is covered.
#3: Do they employ or sub-contract?
You may not think that whether your next renovator chooses to employ or sub-contract could be a deal-breaker for you.
Consider however, that a business that employs a team of fully accredited professionals and invests in that team really does set itself apart from the crowd. They work as a unified team, with communication that is proactive and messages that are received and actioned in a timely manner. In the end, they can offer a more committed and cost effective service.
On the other hand, a business that employs a lot of sub-contractors is often left managing a number of loose ends and is not focused on the client’s project.
#4: Do they quote?
After your first point of contact with any renovator or contractor, they should ideally offer you an obligation-free quote. This shows you that they are truly committed to finding out about your project and providing you with a clear price.
The quote shouldn’t just about the bottom line for you as a client though; it should also outline the details surrounding your project.
A renovator with nothing to hide will be transparent about their service delivery and outline exactly what you will get for that final price. Make sure you understand any quote that is provided to you and don’t forget to ask questions.
#5: Do they provide references?
Accessing references, testimonials and case studies from previous clients shows you that the business has a good reputation. Take a look at their website or ask them when you contact them for a list of references.
Renovators and contractors get their best clientele through word of mouth and referrals, so even better if you stumble upon a local gold mine.
